Fire your vinyl sign maker, and paint one yourself!
Okay, that might not always be so easy, but you have to admit that hand painted signs have a wonderful charm. Even when they are done poorly!
Below are some of the hand painted signs from around our little town of Carrboro, NC, although one is a tag that I thought was hilarious, and another is of some old vinyl letters that are slowly peeling off of the side of a building. The crinkling paper-like quality of the aging vinyl wins my vote, and thus is allowed in to this gallery. If you have any links to hand painted signs, feel free to add them in the comments, I would love to see some from near where you live. (Is it me or am I beginning to sound a bit like Mr. Rogers?)

Eve added these pithy words on Aug 18 08 at 5:39 pmCheck out mysticbluesigns.com. If people are looking for examples of hand painted signs, they should not overlook the professional sign painters–digital typography initially put sign painters out of work, but some of us refused to quit painting–we are making more CREATIVE signs to fill the gap left wide open by the limitations of the computer. Lettering is a wonderful means of self-expression. Funky folk art signs are not the only alternative to vinyl!
