Kansas City: Aging Signage and Graffiti

Here are some photos I took while in KC a while back.

Click on them to view larger.

Busy Bee Sign

Art Sign

Goodman Sign

No Parking: 24/7

I love that “no parking” wasn’t enough so they had to add the symbol for it AND 24-7!

Grafitti on Plexglass

USED

You gotta love 2-layer stencils.

I’m not sure what this means, but it was laying on it’s side. I’ve flipped it here to make it easier on you. Let’s discuss in the comments what it could be referring to?

If you don’t already know, KC has some of the most amazing graffiti artists in the world. Here’s a piece by Scribe and the ATT crew.

Not technically graffiti, but here’s a nice illustration on the side of a store.

Okay, so I just liked this little composition.

Julia took this last one on my camera, but said I could post it. She was with me most of the time taking awesome photos on her camera. I’m sure she’ll be posting them soon on her blog.

This isn’t the first time I’ve posted about signs. Check these out, too:

Jesus is questioned by the authorities of his time. They want to know who gave him the authority to do all the crazy miracles and healings that he was doing. Jesus returned the question. “I will also ask you a question, only one. And if you give me an answer, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was John’s [Jesus' cousin, John the baptist] baptism a work of God, or was it merely something human?” When the authorities were unable to answer Jesus’ question, Jesus replied, “Neither will I tell you by what right I do these things.” You can find the full story in the bible, the book of Matthew 21:23-27.

    Gretchen-
You should send Able some tracks instead of posting text. It would be very interesting to look at the graphic visuals along with the narrative. Other than that, what does your post have to do with old signage and typography? Did I miss something?

What IS Gretchen talking about? Hmmm. Weirdness. These photos are awesome…I love the Futon sign…very 80′s sci-fi.

My comment was in reference to the photo you took of the sign that read “Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.” You asked what it was referring to, and I was simply explaining that it is a quote from the bible.

Gretchen, thanks for clearing that up! I couldn’t make the connection between my post and your comment. I think it had to do with the image you were explaining, the place I found it, and that I could not make sense out of it.

You are always welcome to comment on my blog.
